Carter Hodgkin

My work is based on visualizations of energy, inspired by particle physics and forms in nature.  Approaching the modification of code as a drawing tool, I generate particle collisions altering “behaviors” of the particles such as speed, curvature and gravity. After capturing interactions between particles, I translate the results into paintings, animations and other media. I aim for an intense visual experience where color, line, and form trace movement, energy and space.
I utilize a range of media including animation, programming, printing, drawing, painting and mosaic. My paintings and works on paper are an interplay between digital means woven into traditional media with an emphasis on the hand.

I have interpreted my paintings into large-scale commissions through the medium of glass tile mosaic. I simulate collisions to interact with an architectural space. Each pixel in the design becomes a small tile, enabling a rich array of color and texture.

My animations play out the act of painting, giving the viewer an experience of forms growing, dissipating, and dissolving. Drawing in space and time,  the animations slow down the act of viewing to become meditative. On large LED screens, the animations become large–scale paintings that move.

The work reveals states of flux; mining the relationship between algorithmic data and the pictorial while exploring the emotional possibilities of abstraction.
