GARY STEPHAN
This There
June 18 – July 24, 2022
Gary Stephan: T H I S T H E R E, featuring new paintings and works on paper, on view June 18 – July 24th. The opening reception for the artist, is Saturday, June 18th from 4- 6pm.
The group of paintings and works on paper that comprise Gary Stephan’s solo exhibition at Furnace – Art on Paper Archive are some of the most reductive works he has made to date. Gary Stephan has been working the language of abstraction for decades and has channeled the pure essentials of line and form. The selection of works on paper are made with black tape lines of varied thicknesses. A nod to historic connections with Piet Mondrian, and Barnett Newman who used tape in their work, as well as graphic Droodles in pictures books.
John Yau said of Stephan that “ …[he] works with a pared-down, abstract vocabulary […] that echoes a painting’s structure. Stephan asks us to take nothing for granted, to re-examine everything we look at, even as he makes paintings that are a pleasure to see and consider.”
