Various Artists
PAINT/PAPER
September 2nd – October 15th 2023
Featuring: Cat Balco, Joseph Clarke, Lily De Bont, Zachary Keeting, Stephan Maine, Rob Nadeau, & Deborah Zlotsky.
While each of these artists uses paint as their primary medium, this exhibition also highlights what’s often considered secondary works on paper. For this exhibition, each artist is exhibiting one painting in the main gallery space and one work on paper in the vault space. Showcasing both mediums gives the viewer insight into the ways each artist approaches abstraction, materiality, scale, and color.
The conversations between these disparate works reveal diverse mark-making as well. Cat Balco uses wide, direct strokes derived from “color test strips” in her studio that convey immediacy and gesture; Joseph Clarke contorts actual canvas to build up a dimensional surface he treats with glossy color; Lily De Bont unravels the canvas to its fibers to create movement, activation, and enigmatic interrelationships; Zachary Keeting energizes layered space through frenetic and varied marks and textures; Stephen Maine relies on the serendipity of color interaction through his unique printmaking-like process; Rob Nadeau plays with the special tension between degrees of blurriness and crispness; and Deborah Zlotsky’s paintings evokes the body, self, and the passage of time through the use of drips, dragged strokes, and trompe l'oeil elements.
