Stephen Maine

Stephen Maine is a painter and writer who lives and works in West Cornwall, Connecticut. His paintings and works on paper engage and extend contemporary ideas about color, composition, surface, and process. Maine has developed an idiosyncratic studio procedure that involves the indirect application of paint to substrate by means of elaborate intermediary surfaces that function as printing plates. He controls his palette closely, but otherwise, the material outcome of his process relies heavily on happenstance.

Maine’s critical writing has been published regularly in Art in America, ARTnews, Hyperallergic.com, Artnet.com magazine, Art on Paper, Artillery, the New York Sun, and Artcritical.com, where he is a contributing editor. He has taught at the School of Visual Arts, Parsons The New School, and Hartford Art School, and is currently on the faculty of Purchase College, SUNY.

His work is included in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Museum of Modern Art Library Special Collection, the Whitney Museum of Art, Frances Mulhall Achilles Library, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Yale University Art Galleries.
